Piles are enlarged veins situated in or around the
back passage (anus) caused by increased pressure in the abdomen.
Piles can be either external or internal - if they
occur close to the anal opening they can protrude to form external
piles. If they occur higher up, so they are hidden from view, they
are known as internal piles.
