What causes piles?
Blood vessels can stretch and swell when there is increased pressure in the abdomen and rectum. This pressure can be caused by one (or more) of the following:
- constipation and straining
- pregnancy and childbirth
- strenuous physical exercise
- being overweight
- prostate problems in older men
